The Fall of Athrim
Introduction…
Many years ago there was a beautiful city named Athrim. It was the desire of all people of this amazing city to conquer all the lands in Enchranta. This desire, as glorious as it seems, is what eventually caused the fall of the wondrous city of Athrim.
Many believe that it was not the desire for glory that brought the fall of Athrim, but the greatness of their foes, the skillful Agrior people. There was not a single army in the land of Enchranta that was ever able to defeat the Athrim people. So it is quite obvious that the cause was indeed the need for glorious victory over all the lands and tribes of the land of Enchranta.
The story begins…
It was a beautiful, sunny day in the magical city of Athrim. All the townspeople were shopping for goods or playing in the streets. “Why” you ask, “are there no people working?” Well of course it is the day of rest!
At least it was the day of rest until the Agrior camp was spotted on the horizon. After that it was utter chaos with people running every – which – way and officers of the court trying to calm the people down. For all the people knew of the great skill and speed of the Agrior people and, despite the bravery and courage of the Athrim army, the Agrior were probably the only people in the land of Enchranta who would even have a chance of defeating them.
Over the next few days there was no movement by the Agrior. After this period people started to relax again. This is exactly what the Agrior people wanted but the Athrim people were too confident to realise.
After many weeks, the Agrior charged through the city gates and taunted the Athrim army to come out and attack them – bad mistake! At that very moment the Athrim army did attack, just not in the way the Agrior expected.
The first soldier jumped from the wall followed by a squadron of twenty Athrim fighters armed to the teeth. It looked like the battle had been won by the Athrim then and there but cunning as always the Agrior fought off the first squad and then pointed their spears upwards so that all the people who jumped off the wall were stabbed. The Athrim trusted their armor to protect them but the Agrior spears were specially made and had iron poison tipped heads.
Yet another squad of Athrim soldiers arrived through the city gates. Most onlookers thought that all the Agrior had been killed but in the city it was quite the contrary because the Agrior had defeated almost every squad of Athrim with a weapon they called a catapult (this would be quite strange to the Athrim people because in those times catapults had only just been invented.)
I shall now tell you of a man called James Lingfarm who was by far the bravest of the Athrim Soldiers.
John Lingfarm – the bravest man in the Athrim army…
One by one the men jumped of the walls and were killed by the spears of the Agrior. Some even chickened out and jumped of the other side of the wall! But one man, John Lingfarm, did not chicken out or die for he was able to jump just as the Agrior lowered their spears to clean them. As he drew his sword in an instant he brought down two generals and three soldiers. This encouraged the people on the wall and more people were now jumping down and killing more soldiers.
This was very bad for the Agrior and very good for the Athrim. John continued to slay more soldiers than any other man. It was at last John died when he came across a general clad in pure gold armor that john was defeated, and only just was he defeated. When he reached this great foe he did not hesitate to take a powerful thrust at the golden opponent but this seemed only to make him angrier. John knew that he could not defeat his foe but he died fighting. Many followed his example but none could kill as many men as John Lingfarm.
Despite the bravery of John Lingfarm the Athrim army had been doomed from the start because of the leaders of the city. Who had foolishly thought that the Agrior were no threat and had not prepared the army in proper formation.
And now, my friends I am afraid that the story of Athrim, on these pages has been layed.
